The Situation of Myopia in Taiwan V.2

Nearsightedness is inconvenient to many people in Taiwan . We can find out that
there are some reasons contributed to the problem. Since the situation of myopia is
quite severe, we should put our attention on the issue and understanding the causes of
the health problem.
As time goes by, most of us has the problem of nearsightedness and rely on
glasses. We can also find out that the percentage of out friends who seek for the help
of glasses is getting higher and higher. According to Dr. Chien-Jen Chen, the prevalence of myopia was found to increase with age. The prevalence of myopia of right eyes at age 6-7 was 12%, 54% at age 11-12, 75% at age 14-15, and 85% at age 17-18. Also for instance, we can hardly know someone who isn’t nearsighted in college right now. It is indeed a headache to most of us (Chen,1996).
The situation of myopia is getting worse due to the following reasons. First, Taiwanese students study hard. They spend a long time highly concentrating on relatively small words printed on course book with not enough light source. As they grow up, there are more materials to study and as a consequence their eyes get weaker. Dr. Cheng-Yu Chen explains the relationship among the learning stress, habitual use of eyes and myopia: If students felt the compulsive learning stress much higher, their eyes will become myopia (Chen, 2003).
During leisure time, Taiwanese students often choose playing computer games, watching TV, surfing the net instead of exercising, sightseeing as their extracurricular activities. The choice they make relaxes only their exhausted souls but not eyes. According to Dr. Wing-Fung Cheng, the children''s recreation amusement couldn’t do without the electronic products for gaming, webbing and passing massage, and the people using electronic products for above 7 hours in a week have higher myopia progression (Cheng, 2006).
The third reason is that a large part of Taiwanese people lack the knowledge of eye protection. They do not understand how important it is to protect this organ, and thus their eyes lack exercising and relaxing during a long period of time.
The situation of myopia in Taiwan is severe and getting worse. We should be aware of the problem and take care of our own eyes. Do not overuse them and give them some relaxation often. It is a crucial issue to any of us.
